The Tale of Sir Nick Faldo

“The word is control. That’s my ultimate — to have control.”

“The word is control. That’s my ultimate — to have control.”

Saw that quote and I thought there was some wisdom there, a kernel perhaps, so I did some investigating about this knight, Sir Nick Faldo.

Met Wife #1 when he was 21.

Married her in 1979,

less than five years later they parted

when she discovered

he was having an affair

with his manager’s secretary.

Faldo said,: “We were happily married

for eight months.

Unfortunately, we were married for four-and-a-half years.”

Faldo’s divorce from Wife #1

came before his major championship successes

and her settlement was relatively small….

He married his manager’s secretary in 1986.

The couple had three children.

When Faldo moved to America in 1995

to play full-time on the PGA tour,

Wife #2 stayed at home in England

and the marriage ended later that year

after Faldo began a relationship

with a 20-year-old American golfing student.

Wife #2 later revealed the births of their three children

had been induced

to avoid any clashes

with Faldo’s playing schedule.

She said of Faldo:

“Socially, he was a 24-handicapper.”

Faldo’s three-year affair

with the 21- or 22-year-old, ended

when he met a Swiss publicist.

The spurned 23-year-old famously

battered Faldo’s Porsche 959 with a golf club,

probably a nine-iron,

causing thousands of dollars of damage.

Faldo’s relationship with Wife #3 began in 1998

when they met at the European Masters golf tournament.

She left her fiance

and married Faldo in July, 2001

in a lavish ceremony.

They have a daughter (born 2003).

May, 2006, Faldo had filed for divorce.

SELF-control

must be so much harder to achieve.
