Portrait Of The Artist As A Middle-Aged Canid

Began to think of myself

as WILD DOG,

reading the New York Times

Sunday magazine.

Wallet must’ve been good.

Seems there’s a favorite Austrian folk tale

about the dog who,

having known captivity,

escapes to enjoy freedom

in the wild.

Such an animal

is more dangerous

and more cunning,

the tale tells us,

than wolves who have never known

submissive domesticity.

The wild dog remembers

the chains and the

captivity, and so

he is more fierce

than other creatures.

Something like that.

Become

your own

hero.
