Kid OGOR: Keith Brantly

“The thing I had to keep telling myself was that I could be bleeding from the eyes and I would not drop out.”

Keith Brantly just looks youthful. He ran his first road race in 1978. He was sixteen.

And his career ended more recently than most of the early stalwarts of the sport. Heck, he placed fifth (18:49) at the Betty Griffin House 5K in St. Augustine on April 12, 2014. He was a month shy of fifty-two.

He is probably still out rambling around right now. Old but recent.

When did you start running and why?

My start in running was, nearly literally, by accident.  At age eleven, I was injured in a boating accident when I fell out of the bow of a ski boat with the prop hitting my right foot with my Achilles holding my heel.  Most of the nerves in my foot were damaged and I was in a cast for six months.  Back then Radiologist and Orthopedic surgeons worked closely together.  The Radiologist on my case, Dr. Arnie Spanjers, was also a neighbor who also happened to be a runner.  Two and half years after my boating accident, at age 13, I was running in my front yard from one of my three older brothers; I’m sure I pissed him off about something which is why I was running.

Then I glanced up and saw Dr. Spanjers running on the road next to our house.  He was training for the 1976 Boston Marathon.  Assuming an adult would save my life from my brother’s beating, I ran out in the road and caught up with Dr. Spanjers.  He looked at me as I matched his pace, then he said, “looks like your foot has healed nicely, do want to run to the end of the road and back?”…two miles roundtrip.  I said “sure!” as I looked back hoping my brother was not catching up to us.  I thought, “what’s worse, suffering for a two mile run or getting my ass beaten by one of my brothers.”

Little did I know how painful, physically and emotionally, running would be over the years.

Toughest opponent and why?

Basil Magee,  Largo High School.  Basil had an incredible finishing kick and he used it on me my entire senior year.  I believe Basil had the Florida High School record in the mile at 4:07.  Still, Basil and I became good friends.  We ran the Kinney (now Footlocker) championships together. Basil ran a brilliant race for top-ten.  I struggled home in twenty-something.

The front cover of RW. Barefoot, in NB kit.

Most memorable run and why?

Beating Basil Magee my senior year in the Florida State Cross Country Championships.  Basil owned me throughout much of our Senior year in cross country.  I beat him once that year because he had some sort of stomach bug.  For the State Cross Country Championships, my coach and I had decided the only way to beat Basil was to run up a lead from the start of the race, so his finishing kick would be taken out of play.  The plan was to hit the first mile in 4:25 and keep the pressure on, as long as I could; it was total suicide, but it was the only option we had and it worked.  I ran 14:18 for three miles, Basil was about ten to fifteen seconds back.  Not a bad time, even by today’s standards.  Still today, out of the nearly five hundred races I’ve run, that was the only “Perfect” race I ran during nearly forty years of competitive running.

Biggest disappointment and why?

1994 Boston Marathon.  Going into the race, I was in the best shape of my life.  My coach, Dr. David Martin, and I had a plan to sit back at 4:55-to-5-minute pace and then hammer the hills.  (Despite being from Florida, I loved hilly races and wasn’t a terrible hill runner.)  During the day of Boston, while I was running 4:55’s, the pack was behind me by thirty seconds at 15K.

This was the part where I should have recalled that, rarely in the modern era, no male runner has gone on to win a major marathon – NYC, London, Chicago, Boston, Olympics – having lead the race solo at thirteen miles.  Cosmas N’Deti went on to win in what I believe was a world or course record. [CR 2:07:15.]

If I were ever going to break 2:10, that was the day.  I struggled home in twentieth with a 2:13.  What a fucking dumb-ass.

What would you do differently if you could do it again?

Seek out and train with more elite runners, more often.  Why?  While I trained with great runners from time to time, in Gainesville; Barry Brown, Tom Nohilly, Dan Middleman, Mike Blaney, Mark Sheehan; in Brevard, NC and Blacksburg, VA, with Steve Spence, Jeff Campbell, Steve Taylor, I should have taken a more pragmatic approach starting in the mid-eighty’s which would have helped me get better, faster.  It wasn’t until 1993 when I trained with a group of Kenyans under the guidance of Tom Ratcliffe, that I really took the group training seriously.  It paid off that year with a ninth place at Boston, 61:30 half, and at fifth place at NYC.

Favorite philosopher?

Dr. David Martin.

The best coaches are philosophers. Favorite quote?

“It’s not how much training you DO, rather, it’s how well you recover from the training you DO DO. Because, if you get injured or sick from DOing too much, you are in deep DOO DOO.” Dr. Dave says, “The Do-Do Rule covers a multitude of sins for the runner and has never been proven wrong.”

Dr. Dave and Keith. with the tangible fruits of hard work and good science

Special song of the era?

“Hotel California”, Eagles, and “Baby Got Back”, Sir Mix a Lot.

Favorite comedian?

Robin Williams.

What was your ‘best stretch of running’?

1989 through 1993

And so why do you think you hit that level at that time?

I was consistently improving with few injuries.  I enjoyed racing and I raced A LOT!

What was your edge?

Ironically, I developed, a not bad finishing kick.  If I could stay close, I could usually out sprint some guys at the end.

What supplementary exercises did you do?

I did a lot of sixteen ounce curls, along with bounding and skipping drills taught to me by Grete Waitz.

I did a lot of sixteen ounce curls along with bounding and skipping drills taught to me by Grete Waitz.
Where I come from a “16 oz. curl” is a reference to beer consumption.

You are correct on the 16 oz. curls…the weight of the glass and ale contained within.

However, I ONLY did the 16 oz. curls AFTER the  bounding and skipping drills.  I have zero coordination which would only be worsened by alcohol.

Any idiot can train himself into the ground;

the trick is working in training to get gradually stronger.”

What was your toughest injury and how did you deal with it?

I had a strain of the Gracilis muscle [hip abductor] in my groin which, if I coughed or sneezed in mid-stride, pain felt as if someone had kicked me in the testicles.

How did I deal with it? I rested, and stopped and bent over, if I felt a sneeze or cough coming on.

Super shoes.  What is your opinion, if you have one?  And do you wonder ever how fast you might run today?

Each sucessive generation of runners has benefited from material and technological innovations and improvements.  I ran on asphalt and rubber after my Dad ran on cinders; him in leather shoes with leather soles, me with rubber cushioned soles with light nylon uppers.

As long as everyone has equal access, I have no problem with these incredible performance-improving designs and materials.  I ran in my first and only pair of Alpha Flys at the 2018 Berlin Marathon.  To the best of my knowledge at the time, New Balance had not come out with a “super shoe” and I thought I’d drop some money and buy a pair.  Long story short, based on my fitness for Berlin at best I was in 3:35 marathon shape, but I ran a 3:08.  It was as if I were a character in the Disney show, Son of Flubber.  The Alphas not only cushioned the foot strike, the recoil was like running on a trampoline.

During the the twelve years I ran for New Balance, 1989 through 2001, the designers made some pretty incredible shoes. We were always experimenting with new materials and designs, so I think I got a lot out of myself with their performance shoes.  However, with the new materials it’s very possible I could have been in the high 2:09 range.

That would maybe put you within a stride or few ahead of the current women’s world record holder, I hesitate to say, so I don’t.

But, honestly, I didn’t really care how fast I ran a marathon, I just wanted to finish the fucking race.
