Things That Are NOT A National Emergency

Better a cruel truth than a comfortable delusion. – Edward Abbey

OBESITY

Approximately 40% of adults – including The Donald – are obese.

That’s not healthy.

CLIMATE CHANGE

“There is alarming evidence that important tipping points, leading to irreversible changes in major ecosystems and the planetary climate system, may already have been reached or passed.”

It’s getting worse.

GUN DEATHS.

A steady rise in suicides involving firearms has pushed the rate of gun deaths in the US to its highest rate in more than 20 years, with almost 40,000 people killed in shootings in 2017.

It’s gotten worse.

HOMELESSNESS.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), there were roughly 554,000 homeless people living somewhere in the United States on a given night last year.

Not glamping.

HEALTH INSURANCE.

The Census Bureau reported that the number of uninsured persons rose from 27.3 million in 2016 to 28.0 million in 2017.

Gotten worse.

NATIONAL DEBT.

The national debt surpassed $22 trillion for the first time 2/12/19, a milestone that experts warned is further proof the country is on an unsustainable financial path that could jeopardize the economic security of every American.

Trickle-down economics is a myth.

PUBLIC EDUCATION.

“If the taxpayer is paying for education, it’s public education,” even if it’s a private school. – Florida’s new governor.

Educated in the public school system, I can say – without a scintilla of doubt, on this issue, at a minimum – Governor DeSantis is full of shit.

INCOME/WEALTH DISPARITY.

In 2015, the top 1 percent of families in the United States made more than 25 times what families in the bottom 99 percent did,

It’s gotten worse. A lot worse.

CRUMBLING INFRASTRUCTURE

The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that the nation’s highways and bridges face an $808.2 billion backlog of investment spending, including $479.1 billion in critically needed repairs. More than two-thirds of the nation’s roads and nearly 143,000 bridges are classified in “dire need” of repair or upgrades.

It’s gotten worse.

POVERTY.

Over 40 million people live below the poverty line in the United States.

More than at any other time in U.S. history, some 18 million children—almost a quarter of all minors—live in poverty in America. As a result, children are by far the largest demographic group facing the effects of poverty on a daily basis, and the least able to confront it.

And getting worse.

But NOT a national emergency.

I realize I omitted a few horrible, terrible issues.
Just remember, it’s not about the wall, it’s about THE FIGHT about The Wall.
