I paid her the money I owed
and we had a goodbye beer.
Though I’d see her again,
it was still goodbye.
“We two” had been a mistake
we both knew.
She disappeared without looking back
and I didn’t watch her go.
I was left alone with an empty glass
and a forgiving wife I loved more than before.
