Rebel Club

There is no such thing as practice – it’s all real. – Barker Ajax

Before I started running, I lost 80 lbs. on a diet of coffee and cigarettes.

The second rule of Rebel Club.

Know what the hell you are rebellious about.

Think about rebelling FOR something, rather than against something else.

“Thinking outside the box” accepts the concept of a box.

Rebels do not get boxed in.

Watched some talented athletes disappoint themselves recently at a major marathon.

Those six-and-a-half-hour-charity-runners still coming across the finish, a coach admits he’s puzzled.

He said he will have to go back and talk to his scientists, because his athletes were well prepared.

That’s what he said.

And I thought, maybe running is not a science.

Maybe running is an art.

Maybe somebody needs a new coach.

The answers to greatness are not found in science.

Study the poets like Zatopek and Clarke, Edelen and Cerutty.

Grete Waitz, for goodness sakes.

Prefontaine was no scientist.

Pre was an artist.

“You think this is a game?”
