Who Else Has Run 100,000 Miles?

Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time. – John C. Maxwell

Darryl Beardall sadly died before he could reach 300,000 miles. (294,738 mi. lifetime)

Greetings fellow high mileage running enthusiasts:

I am going to make an effort to compile that 100K list I mentioned doing last winter. I have come up with about 250 names so far.  Thanks for your assistance. I’ll add Frank Shorter and Joan Samuelson to the list and say >150,000 for them for now, unless someone can contact them for more specific totals.

I stopped counting years ago. Many years – my bad – I didn’t keep a journal. Don’t make the mistake I made, boys and girls. Need to be more specific, I imagine.

Most I ever ran in a week was 117 miles. At seven thousand feet above sea level, I like to add. A different year I averaged almost 85 miles weekly. “I put fewer miles on my car,” my little brother exclaimed.

Do you think you run a lot? Believe you laid down hellacious mileage back in the day and forgot to stop? Stephen DeBoer asked me to ask you that question – who else has run 100,000 miles?

Here is Steve’s list so far. I think you will see many familiar names.

In Search of Distance Runners Who Have Covered Over 100,000 Miles. Who Else Has Run That Far?

There are likely hundreds of individuals throughout the world who have surpassed 100,000 running miles. This is an attempt to gather as many of them as possible in one location. Steve has been tracking those who have running streaks for over fifteen years. Of course, he’s have found many others on Amby Burfoot’s 100K Lifetime Miles website.

On the list below, [Steve] lists miles as of date recorded, along with the states in which they have traversed the tundra.

An S in front of their name, means they have had at least one running streak lasting 365 days or longer, running a minimum of one mile.

Hello, Jack! I believe I’m at about 190,000. I was at 178,000, not counting high school and college around the time of the pandemic, maybe three years ago. I’m doing about 25 miles a week so maybe is that’s close to 1500 miles a year.

Just checked my Garmin Connect app and it goes all the way back to January 25, 2018! I’ve been averaging 355 miles a year since posting that last total, so I’ve put in around 1650 miles since March 2019. My knees are a bit tired but I’ll try to stay at it as long as I can. I’m running the Pensacola Double Bridge 15k for a 3rd time on February 1st. I’m in the 75 and over so there’s not much competition in that group!

I do not have an accurate count. Some of my 40 years of journals had annual totals, when I was properly training on a regular basis, but I stopped counting when I stopped competing.

A conservative estimate totaled over 100K a long time ago.  But for so many years, I did cross training and as you know it’s all cross training now, and no running at all.

I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t win any running streak.

Must admit, I am shocked – shocked, I tell you – not to see Gerry Lindgren’s name. Whatever number he tells me will be crazy whatever the number is. He allegedly alleged he was doing two hundred miles weekly.

In high school.

Sue Henderson. 1968.

I asked around. I did some sleuthing on my own. Asked Sue Henderson, who started running in 1967 and was out trotting this afternoon.

We have a rough estimate for each of us. Is that good enough? [Husband] Matt is well over 100,000 for sure, which includes six 4,000 mile years. I’m pretty close to or over 100,000 … I think I’m over but I’m not sure.

We ran a lot because we loved to run. In those days you just ran every day, barely tapered for a 15K race on Saturday but followed by a twenty-mile ‘easy’ day on Sunday. Sometimes a race on Saturday AND Sunday. A ridiculous way to run but it was so fun. 😬 Matt for sure over 100K, me close one way or the other. We have running logs for many of our years, then began to slack off somewhat … so depressing to see mileage and race times start to slow down.

I continued to run a lot while working those sixteen years for adidas. Hard 8-milers on my lunch hour with a few of the guys there. One epic day with Dave Murphy – 2:12 marathoner – … a double. I had run a seven-miler alone on my lunch hour when adidas was still in the Beaverton area. There was a lot of fun running from there. Late that afternoon Dave asked me if I wanted to go for a run after work. I told him i was pretty hammered from my noon run. He talked me into it anyway, so I took him on my favorite rolling hills eight-miler. So fun, and I felt great. Clearly, he was a pleasure to run with.

My money is on Camille Herron for the win eventually.

Billy is being chased by a girl and if he runs ten miles daily every day for a year, he still won’t move up the list.

My God, the miles these people have run.

And if you think you are one of them, please contact stephen.william.deboer@gmail.com. If you are not sure, see if you can offer up some corroborating evidence.

If your receipts are sketchy, feel free to mention my name.

Vouching right now for the Hendersons.
