The Wisdom of Sportswriters

“You know, we just don’t recognize the most significant moments of our lives. Back then I thought, Well, there’ll be other days. I didn’t realize that that was the only day.” – Archibald “Moonlight” Graham.

I edited a book earlier in the year and I gave the author this advice… read Sports Illustrated, study the way it is written and you will become a better writer.  So, I renewed my long ago lapsed own subscription.  I read the entire SI, every word from front to back, usually within the first 24 hours upon receipt.

Let nature take its course, and your tools will strike at the right moment.” – Bruce Lee

I can’t toss this treasure, the ink barely dry, so I have taken to leaving the current issue on the stoop across the street. That’s where that annoying young teenage boy lives. Bouncing his damn basketball hour after hour. Reminds me of me at that age.

“When you get to the point where all you want to do is be successful as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” – Erik Spoelstra
“It’s the way this world works. You can’t win unless you win,”  Spoelstra again.

If you want your kid to read, to write better and become a better person, get him or her a subscription to Sports Illustrated.  Good for parents and grandparents, too.  If you want to be a better athlete, a better coach, read SI.   A better teacher?  SI.

Good, better, best
never let it rest
until your good is better
and your better is your best.
