The old man didn’t like traveling much. Liked being there. The old man traveled to a meeting of political operatives to strategize how an ethical candidate might get elected to Congress from Florida’s bright red Eleventh District. Which includes the well-to-do, STD-infected retirement community The Villages.
The old man liked to take props to these limited affairs. Give’em a visual, he always liked to say.
Sunday paper had a front-page huge – I’m tellin’ ya, HUGE – investigative piece on Trump Institute. Which is apparently even worse than Trump University. Can you imagine that?
Old lady gets conned and it takes months and months to get her money back. Thousands of her dollars and it takes months and months.
Article ends like this: “The experience hasn’t helped her image of Trump. ‘I don’t have a lot of respect for the man,’ said Roberts. But she’s voting for him. ‘I think Hillary Clinton is the worse choice. I think she’s crooked as the day is long.”
Thirty years of dirt from the vast right wing conspiracy has paid off, apparently. Somebody you don’t know tells you somebody you have only seen on TV is a terrible person, you believe that. Somebody breaks into your house, takes all your shit, and flips you the bird on his way out of town, that guy you trust more. And you think that makes sense.
Here’s the misconception about the perception the Koch brothers and Sean Hannity and the Heritage Foundation have been selling for years. Not guilty of anything different than every routine politician since the Republicans invented graft.
A Letter To The Editor in The Villages newspaper. When your great grandson sits on your knee and asks, “what was it like when our country was great?” You think about the time when we were a military power no country would dare test. The time when we were the economic leader all nations envied. Remember? The time before Iran had a nuclear weapon and controlled the middle-east, before Russia began their aggressive European expansion and before China became the number one economic nation by calling in their U.S. loans. The days before Iran, Iraq and Syria became the United Islamic State. The time when those who worked hard were compensated for their efforts rather than live off entitlements. The time when the flag, our anthem and, “In God We Trust” directed the spirit of our nation. When he asks you that question, what are you going to say?
Sociologists in coming generations will be studying this place. And it will explain a lot about how America went wrong. A insular ghetto of the self-satisfied and insecure who largely speak only the one language. The old man had to admit, he had friends from childhood who live there happily and contentedly.
But think about it.
