A Walk In The Woods

Ralph Waldo Emerson said,
"Think me not unkind and rude
that I walk alone in grove and glen;
I go to the god of the wood
to fetch his word to men."
The old man thought
the woods around home
too dangerous to walk,
bears and alligators
and rattlesnakes and
redneck hunters and ATVs.
Co-eds from Gainesville.
But he went anyway.
Almost tripped
over a Southern pine cone.
And it was just like Thoreau said.
I took a walk in the woods
and came out taller
than the trees.
